SHOOTS
at the mill

The Mill is a former 18C Corn/Water Mill, set in beautiful surroundings with some spectacular features both inside and out. We have spent our years here renovating and maintaining The Mill and grounds; both the building and gardens offer unique and idyllic scenes for filming and photoshoots.

The Mill House itself still has original features and machinery from when it was a working Corn Mill. It was sensitively converted to a residence in the early 1960’s. The Mill interior is spectacular, with its original workings featured beautifully within the modern interior design of the family home.

At The Mill is ten miles north of York, in North Yorkshire, on the edge of the lovely village of Stillington. Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you will see many unique and stunning settings At The Mill. It is ideal for outdoor shoots at all times of the year. The grounds have many beautiful and natural, unspoiled settings. There is a range of mature trees, fruit trees, hedgerows and riverside areas. We are adjacent to the River Foss, home to Kingfishers and Otters. There is a Glade with a range of trees, an Oak swing and a secret Dell. The Mill Pond has an island with a feature Willow Tree and a decorative bridge. Overlooking the pond is an impressive decking area. There is, in addition, a Mill Race pond at the front of the property, surrounded by a lovely garden.

You will also notice two other beautiful buildings on site: a former cow byre that has been converted into a two-bedroom cottage; and a shepherd’s hut.

Our traditional, hand-made Shepherds Hut was featured on the American New York TV Company, Loud TV, in their series “Tiny House World”. The Mill also starred in a TV feature by Rightmove, called Moving Stories.

We have hosted three weddings at The Mill.  The photographs from our first happy event won an international award for the photographer.

We have also hosted numerous performances. Our own Alexander Wright and his company The Flanagan Collective created a community promenade production of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” that roamed The Mill grounds. A sister theatre company used At The Mill’s site for production shots for Shakespeare’s “The Merchant Of Venice”. The Enid Blyton Foundation commissioned a new play to be written and performed At The Mill to mark the 75th Anniversary of "The Famous Five go to Treasure Island”. More recently, we have hosted two internationally award-winning shows, “Orpheus” and “Eurydice” and provided studio space for the creation of “Half Man || Half Bull”, a new narrative-lead theatrical listening experience of music and spoken word. And we are currently in the midst of our inaugural Summer At The Mill programme (2021), of Supper Clubs, Theatre, Music and Special Events.

It is a pleasure to offer our site for photo and film opportunities. We have good facilities and access; and we happily offer good Yorkshire hospitality. We look forward to hearing from you and discussing your ideas and plans.
